Born and raised in Iowa, owner Angie Martin moved around to different towns with her family due to her mom being a member of the Hy-Vee management family. More comfortable with a book in her hand than trying to make new friends everywhere she went, Angie started to embrace being the “nerd” of the family. 

When she was 14, her mom was promoted to the first Hy-Vee store in the Kansas City area, in Lee’s Summit. Her first job – Hy-Vee. Learning that no matter what your position was, customer service was always part of the job. She still remembers her first supervisor, Steve, telling them “If you don’t know where something is, find it, show the customer, and remember it for the future.” She still takes that to heart in her work. When her mom transferred to the new Gladstone store, and then the new Liberty store, Angie moved right along with her. 

Angie met her future husband while working at Hy-Vee (30 year anniversary in 2025!) and went on to have three beautiful, intelligent children. Now she is a Nana to a beautiful little girl and another on the way. Her grandkids give her meaning. Angie became a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan and root for them whether or not they are winning (but thank goodness, they are!!).

Angie received her Associate’s Degree in Accounting from Maple Woods and transferred to the University of Kansas City – Missouri to finish her Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Besides a 5 year stint at Sprint, she has worked solely in small business accounting. 

“Small business accounting is amazing. You have to touch and be part of everything. You aren’t just pigeon-holed into one position. Given my ability to learn quickly, and my desire to absorb information, I became indispensable to the companies I worked with, and learned all of the moving pieces just because I wanted to.” Angie has worked for years in the mortgage and property management fields, telecommunications and IT, and most recently as the General Manager of a foundation repair company. 

Angie started out helping friends with their bookkeeping on the side in 2018. She created Essistant KC in 2022 to give small businesses the same leg up that larger businesses have – a knowledgeable partner in running their business. If she doesn’t know the answer to the question, she will research and find the answer. She doesn’t keep her clients at arms’ length, she befriends them. Hugs are the norm at in-person meetings…and client referrals? Most of her clients come that way. 

Besides working on Essistant KC, Angie also is a 50% partner in DewBwah, a digital marketing agency, and helps clients increase their leads by utilizing paid ads and SEO. She also is a partner in Small Talk KC, a local small business mastermind group dedicated to educating and providing opportunities to other small businesses.

When Angie isn’t working, she spends her time hanging out with her husband, her dogs, her adult kiddos, and her grandchild. Her favorite place to be is Galveston, TX and she travels there multiple times a year to stare at the water. Her personal goal is to grow her remote businesses so much that she and her husband can buy a home there and move full-time.
